Is the Maestro payment card being discontinued?
Yes. Banks officially stopped issuing new Maestro cards in July 2023, and the network will be completely phased out by late 2027. In the meantime, banks are actively replacing them with Debit Mastercards. If you offer Maestro with Mollie, any active Maestro card still works perfectly in your checkout.
What is the difference between Maestro and Mastercard Debit?
It mostly comes down to how they work online. Maestro was originally built for in-store shopping. Cards lacking a standard 16-digit number or a CVC code can’t be used with all digital checkouts, as older ecommerce forms can’t read them.
Debit Mastercard changes that. It works exactly like a credit card online – requiring a standard card number, expiry date, and CVC – but draws money directly from the customer's current account. This upgrade makes online shopping much smoother, boosting your conversion rates.
Do Maestro cards still work for international payments?
Yes, they still work for online and in-person payments, particularly across Europe. However, because global payment standards are moving forward, shoppers travelling outside of Europe sometimes run into terminal rejections with legacy Maestro cards. That’s why accepting a wide mix of payment methods through Mollie is a smart move – if a customer's Maestro card is declined, they can quickly use another option.

Yes, Maestro is a secure payment method. It uses strict, real-time electronic authorisation. This means a transaction is only approved if the money is actually sitting in the customer's account, which protects your business from fraud.
